FASTER HELP IN SIGHT
The Central Emergency Department (CED) at the Albertinen Hospital in Hamburg currently treats approximately 45,000 patients each year. In recent years, there has been a significant upward trend, making adjustments urgently necessary.
These increasing demands on treatment, along with related adjustments to processes and, in some areas, heightened hygiene and medical technology requirements for both new and existing spaces, necessitate the renovation and expansion of the current CED facilities at the Albertinen Hospital.
After a restructuring concept was developed to improve the management of a higher number of patients, including those requiring isolation, we were commissioned earlier this year to review this concept in the short term, revise it if necessary, and, after coordination with the Ministry of Labour, Health, Social Affairs, Family and Integration of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and upon approval of the necessary funding, implement it as quickly as possible for the Albertinen Hospital.
The Central Emergency Department is currently located on the ground floor of the hospital’s function wing, which opened in 2014, and will now be expanded. Adjacent areas (including those of the elective admissions unit) will be integrated into the CED to create additional examination and treatment rooms, which can also be used as isolation rooms if needed. Following the renovation, walk-in emergency patients and their accompanying persons will have a new, separate entrance next to the hospital’s main entrance, in addition to the existing access for stretcher-bound emergency patients via the ambulance entrance.
The newly created waiting area will be divided into two separate sections to better meet future hygiene requirements. In addition, the admissions process will be optimized and prepared for expanded digital workflows.
Construction will take place during ongoing 24/7 operation of the CED, and the functioning of both the Central Emergency Department and the rest of the hospital must be ensured at all times. In collaboration with the CED team, we will make every effort to minimize disruptions for patients, visitors, and staff alike.
